Thought I would put a nice, original color Lincoln up for grading. It is not to often you find one that has not been dipped a few times and has retained much if its original color. I have assigned a grade of MS64 to this. The obverse and reverse have a couple dings on them. What do you think, lower or higher?

As mentioned in the "latest acquisition" thread, nice coin! I'd say this is commensurate with a MS64 grade. The couple of contact marks on the obverse and reverse are probably what would keep it out of the 65 level.

MS-64 seems about right. Colorwise, this is an RB coin that is more red than brown. Supposedly the "RB" range extends all the way from a coin which has only 5% of its original red color to one with 95% red color. Obviously, those that are near the 95% red level are most desirable and should cost more. This cent is maybe 75% red based on the photos.
Very nice and attractive!

AU-58 from the picture there looks like some wear on the cheek jaw and tip of the nose and hair above the ear and tip of the shoulder on the obverse ,the reverse seems to be a little darker on the right side wheat stalk and head (my right) as I look at the picture which could also be wear,, these maybe a picture anomoly but that is what I see in the picture as it is .

I think I'm with metalman on this one... just a shade of rub on the jaw is standing out to me. (On first glance I would have said MS..... If it's not rub, I don't think the contact marks in question should affect the grade that much as they're not in the main fields, and are as small as they are. (It took me a while to find the marks on the reverse)

I think the discoloration is from someone storing it in a Dansco album or something that contacted the high points and made them discolored. In hand and under magnification there appears to be no wear on the coin. Either way I picked it up cheap ($35) and it will make an nice addition to my Dansco (though I have been thinking of going to something else)!
On a side note, how does PCGS and NGC grade a coin? Ie: do they look at in under magnification? Is so what power? Is grading done in hand or under the magnification? I ask this as I am thinking of going through some of my early BU rolls and trying to pick out some top pops. My friend bought some of the same rolls I have and has had some good luck with coins coming back MS 67-68. That would be a cool thread, pick the top pop, I could put up some coins, people pick which ones will come back the highest.

Nice pickup, I see lincolns like this all the time with apparent "wear" on the high points, when in fact it is just contact marks from a slider type album. Still ms64 RB looks to be about right for the coin

chrsb, PCGS grades the coin in hand as well as under high magnification. https://www.pcgs.com will walk you through the standards of grading and, you can watch a video of the grading process to give you an idea.

Thanks for the link guys, very interesting. I think I will do a "Top Pop" grading thread here in the near future!

How do you like the grading part where they handle your coins without gloves?! Arrrggggggg Wonder if that's what they do with proofs too?

I was going to say something about that, they way he slid the coin out of the 2X2 right into his bare hands. He did handle the edges but I would still be !@#$#@ off if mine came back with a nice finger print on it. I have read stories where a coin came back with finger prints on it, I think it was on here somewhere. Maybe that is how they keep the MS68-69 Lincoln number down, the first guys puts a nice finger print on it, the next one discounts for it.
