That is called a counterstamp. Someone has for whatever reason, hand punched the numbers
Onto the coin after it has left the mint. You see these often with different variations.

Always show both sides of the coin when making inquiries.

Nice counter stamp. Some collectors love these.

@mal, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes this is a so-called maveric counterstamp. It is unlikely that you will find out who did this and why, but it is still a fun thing to keep around.

Although I am a fan of counter stamped coins but not the destructive ones like this.

Basically they are a damaged coin. So they would be a harder to sell.

Neat counter stamp. I'm surprised the date stamped on it is earlier than the mint. I see these from time to time but typically I assume the year stamped on them is the "present" at time of stamping. Hmmpf. You never know sometimes.

Just guessing it is political due to the years.

Coins, especially the one cent coins, are used as raw material for anything and everything imaginable, whether for pure vandalism, art work, or to send messages of all types. One of our members has a fascinating collection of counterstamps on very common coins, which are far more interesting than the coins themselves.

Must have been a time traveler to stamp 1968 on a 1972 coin.
