I've got someone offering these two coins in one deal @ $400.

The 1885 CC looks like it has either PVC damage or cleaning/polish damage.

Half of me wants to pay - the other half is telling me to run away from this mess. Says he will only sell them together for $400. Told myself I'd find a CC before xmas - but not one that's destroyed.

Any info or expertise would be appreciated!

From those pictures I wouldn't do it. Hi-res images of both surfaces of each coin then maybe.......

That 85 is fake, and likely the 91 as well

Certainly not a wise buy as a package, real or not. This thread seems a duplicate.

First thread was deleted @frog. This is the only one from @numa on this coin now.

The 85 is a screaming counterfeit. I'd stay away from them. Don't ruin your Christmas!

Buy yourself a nice 82, 83 or 84 CC in the GSA package at a local shop or coin show. You'll be much more happy in the long run.

CoinFrog - yes it is duplicate. Also only my third or fourth post. I posted yesterday in the morning and couldn't for the life of me find the original post when I came home from work. Sorry - wasn't trying to clog the room.

The guy provides videos of the coins being weighed - touched with a magnet - and even what he calls a 'ping' test. Claims it was his grandfather's and he inherited them.

That was my instinctive response as well. The 1885 looks like a mushy, cheap Chinese fake. The 1891 looks "better", but still close enough to the other fake that's it's definitely suffering from guilt by association.

I think the yellow colour is coming from the coins being made of brass with a thin silver wash, and someone's tried to clean them and started polishing the silver layer away, showing the brass core underneath.
