I have an Indian Head penny with a blank space in the date. 18_1, no mark, no scratch, no nothing. Is this a mint error? Is it collectible, as an anomaly or error or fluke or what? First timer that I am, I don't know if I can post pix, but I'll try, if needed.

We are really going to need a picture to say for sure but a guess
would be that it is a partial Grease Filled Die which have little extra value.

Note:
Always post a clear picture of both sides when posting.

Since the feather design changed in 1886, we might actually still be able to tell you what date it is - even if that number is missing. But we do need to see a pic.

I have an Indian Head penny with the same feature, one digit missing. ill post a pic too. no marks where the missing number should be, its just gone. grease would at least leave some residue.

This format is nearly impossible on iPad. I think I've posted pictures but cannot tell.

There was a design change in 1886, and yours was minted after the change. Thus, it is definitely 100% an 1891, even if you can't see the 9 at all. Minor struck thru grease, but it's common and not really worth much of a premium if any at all. Still a nice coin tho.

Before 1886, the last feather in the Indian's headdress pointed between the I and the C of America. During that year the design was changed so that the feather pointed between the C and the A of America, which continued until the end of the series in 1909.

I read that a teenager collector discovered the design change in the 50's or 70's (I just remember it started with an odd number) - before that, it flew under the radar (according to the story I read ... which of course I don't have a source for).

Thank you Frog and robbudo for educating this old time collector. I once heard a saying that every man is my superior in that I may learn from him. Thanks for the information!
