Looks technically like the overdate from date position relative to dentils, very late die state with most markers gone, old cleaning and remaining ED, really don't see this worth much of a premium.

Appreciate the feedback frog. However, from what I've seen even a detailed low VF example is still worth a significant premium over a normal example, right? Despite value, this is a very tough variety as is so still a win in my book. Thanks.

Really great find! Definitely has some premium over a normal coin.

Thanks Tanman! I thought so. Even with an old cleaning this is a rare variety and most likely the most popular FEC variety out there.

Nice find, what are your plans for it? I tend to keep my first picks for varieties, they are special in their own way.

I'll probably end up keeping this one. Quite a tough variety to cherry-pick and not sure how long it will be before I find another. If someday I do end up cherry-picking another example that's nicer than this, I might consider selling this one. But without another to fill that hole in my collection I won't be selling this. Thanks!

Sure looks good - even the wing tip interruption....

Yup! Reverse marker also backs it up.

Nice pickup! I recently got a very strong EDS xf40 NGC. Fun ones to find in the wild!

Thanks RedRaider! This is the first one I've found so far. Hopefully more to come but as they get more worn it's super tough to find them. An XF example would be a treat!
Hi Zurie! So I took a look at the example you have. I don't see anything on the 8 to warrant an 8/7 or the die chip in the field but as you mentioned you could check for the marker I found. You could upload an image of that area if you wanted to or check it in hand yourself.
The other option is your example could be the "weak" variety since the weak overdate has no reverse marker but you might have difficulty finding more strong markers to match. I'll take a look at the 1858/7 weak on PCGS and see if I can find any other markers you might be able to match.
There are examples of 1858 FEC with the missing wing tip that aren't the overdate so it's a good possibility that yours won't be the overdate. However, I hope what you find will be conclusive that you've got one! Best of luck!

I looked at mine again, and there's some crud along the devices just where that die marker is supposed to be. That's a nice marker to know about, but looking at some graded examples on Heritage, it doesn't look like it's always there. That die chip above the date is hard to photograph, but it's definitely there on my coin. Yours looks like a good example!
