Other than being cleaned, which I did because it was totally crusted and unreadable, what happened to the C in CENTS and the weird surface starting under the U in UNITED , covering most of the reverse?

Yes, I though that as well, but how could it retain its shape? Seems unlikely to me, but this is the first one like this that I have encountered. Did you look at my question about the finish starting under the U? Thanks for your input.

It's damage. PMD. The metal has been moved over, from the hit.

That's some heavy PMD right there. Looks like the C caught the wrong end of a pair of pliers or something.
