it looks like above the eight that their is a line but it could also be the date wearing away, it looks like it has been cleaned but if it is a 1918/7-s then I wouldnt care if it was cleaned. opinions, sorry abut the sellers bad photo  |

Similar to the 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel, you would see a "flat top" 8 as well as the 7 going down through the two loops of the 8. I would suspect post mint damage making the 8 look flatter than normal as I don't see the tell tale sign of the 7 through the two loops. I could be wrong. I am just going by the pics. I'm not sure. It certainly looks like an 8 over a 7. I would like to see a closer blow-up of the date. I agree with wwhitman, that it's not identical to the one he posted but there can be variations in two similar dated coins. So, I wouldn't rule out the overstrike yet!  |

I've studied this overdate in hopes of finding one in a lower grade. Here's a pic of the 1918/7-S in various grades as a comparison. Even when the top of the 8 is hard to see, notice the lower loop of the 8 is almost covered by the 7?  |
