I don't think that this damage is the result of a dryer as that seems to enlarge the rims rather than wiping them away. I do agree that this nickel didn't leave the mint looking like this.

When I first looked at the side picture I thought it looked like acid may have eaten into the sides but after looking closer the rims have seem to be pounded (rounded) over the side of the nickel.
