Acquired in a batch of 1951, 1955, 1957 proof nickels for $17.36. Thoughts on those corrosion spots?

I'll take a guess and say PR-67. I'd leave the coin as is.

Tell me you needed the 55 and/or 57 for your Proofs collection, otherwise for me that 51 with "damage" would become an impaired proof for someone else. I've played around with many nickels with corrosion and all the results turn out the same. You can neutralize it but when you remove it what's underneath is no good.

I also needed the 55.

Perhaps my understanding is flawed. I believed that those dark flecks are where corrosion happened, and then stopped. It isn't like verdigris, which will continue eating across the surface of the coin. I have seen a number of proof coins with a few tiny black flecks in straight graded holders.

Nice looking coin, despite those pesky corrosion spots.

i think all of the discoloration, spotting and weaker reverse strike in the center will hold the grade back on this one. wasnt sure if you wanted a grade or not. I have it at PF63 maybe 64
