I'm considering purchasing a collection that includes this coin in the 1856 Flying Eagle cent slot. These are the best photos the seller has provided so far, so unfortunately the image quality isn't great.
I know altered-date 1856 Flying Eagle cents are extremely common, particularly altered 1858s, so I'm assuming it is not genuine unless there are convincing diagnostics otherwise.
The 6 concerns me —t he positioning looks a little unusual to my eye. Before I completely write it off, though, I wanted to get opinions from members who know the series better than I do.
Based on what can be seen in these photos:
I realize nobody can definitively authenticate a coin from blurry photos, but I'd appreciate any observations before I decide whether it's worth pursuing further.
The example can not be authenticate from the photos, and a purchase would be a waste of money. From the photos it looks like a counterfeit. The font on the 5 in the date is different on the 56 and 58, but I can not tell anything from these blurry photos. On the reverse the serif on the N's look off. A strong pass.
