Hounddog Bill Pillar of the Community Canada 1255 Posts	Posted Yesterday 4:48 pm The coins in this set are all very nice accept perhaps the 1999 Belgium coin which does have some contact marks. When the time comes to sell these coins would I be better off removing them from the packaging and sell separately or leave as is. I ask because I'm not sure it's a proper set, some coins look proof or proof like while others look like circulation coins. Although I would tempted to keep it intact because it is an interesting set. And no, they aren't the same dates, different countries had different ways of dating their coins for the Euro. Some did the date they were minted, others did the date they'd be released. The dates vary, as not all 12 member states issued their first 1 euro coin in 1999. 5 Countries issue their coins in 1999, and 7 issued theirs in 2002. Other states which weren't the first 12, also issued coins around that time. Monaco in 2001, San Marino & the Vatican in 2002. However your set is not a true first issue set, as I can see at least 2 coins in the set that are not the first year. The France coin is 2000 & The Netherlands coin is 2001, both of which issued their 1st 1 euro in 1999. To be a complete set you would also need all 5 mints from Germany & 2 mints for Greece. I suspect that the Stuttgart Mint may have obtained rolls or bags (starter kits) of coins from each country in late 2001 or early 2002. I visited France in the Fall of 2001 and got starter kits of French coins before they were released into circulation on January 1, 2002. The starter kits contained a mixture of 1999, 2000 and 2001 coins. Regarding the finish on the coins, I travel extensively in the Eurozone and find these vary considerably. I've noticed especially that many mint-new Spanish coins look almost like proofs, with highly polished fields and frosted reliefs. On the contrary I find many German coins have an overall matt finish even when Uncirculated. I would definitely keep the set as it is. These coins were issued in huge quantities and even in MS have only a small premium over face value, but a sealed set issued by a major European mint will always be of interest to collectors.
