I've been offered what looks to be a proof coin set from Pakistan dated 1948, in the original case.

I've seen a few Tiktok / Youtube videos discussing the set, but haven't yet seen an auction result for one.

Krause shows a mintage figure of 5,000, which seems high for a set that I can't see any market activity for.

My question is - is this what a proof coin set from Pakistan dated 1948 looks like, or is this a regular set?

Hi Andrew and
I have never seen one of these sets before, but based on contemporary Royal Mint issues, it looks like an authentic proof set. I rather doubt if any normal Uncirculated sets were officially issued. Royal Mint proofs at the time generally had very shiny polished surfaces with no frosting of the legends or devices.

IIRC there were later restrikes of these. Let me source that.

@LandonM, The information on the Pakistan Mint website isn't clear on whether the set was only struck in 1948, or whether they continued to restrike them. Sets dated 1948 are still sold, but they are in a different configuration and aren't described as proof.

The characteristics the coins have aren't as easy to discern as proofs as others I've handled from that era - the surfaces are a little reflective, but the rims aren't particularly sharp and there is no cameo evident.

If it is a proof set, it has to be important, even if it isn't particularly valuable!

I agree with all of your comments, Andrew.
(Incidentally, we have shared short conversations with each other at coin shows)

NumisRob : My personal feeling is,
if you think the price is right, buy it; I certainly would.
