I went to the VamWorld site ( https://vamworld.com/wiki/1878-P_VA...Feathers.29) but there are over twenty different varieties of this one (and I thought it would be easy! ... ) So, once again, I would really appreciate some help. If you can immediately spot the relevant variety, that would be great! Otherwise, just point me in the right direction. Here I will start with a close-up of the 7/8 TF region: And here are the full obverse and reverse images: I would like to mention that I inherited this coin from my parents who kept them in a jewelry box, unprotected from humidity, in the South Texas Gulf coast area. I saw these in that box in the late 1960's. After that, at some point in time (after 1970) they were transferred to a Whitman folder with all the negative side-effects of that environment. So, BU they ain't! But the detail is still mostly there, and this one was never cleaned... (at least not by me!) Thanks for your help!

OK, I think this is one of the 7/5 varieties?

Very easy to pin point these down. Just research and take the time.

Thanks! While I agree that the reverse tail feathers match VAM 38 the best, I can't see any of the spectacular doubling on LIBERTY or other legends that this variety is supposed to have. However, my camera (and my eyes, for that matter) are not that capable compared to the wonderful images on the VamWorld site. Are there any other possibilities?

It's hard to tell from the photos, but this may also be one of the 7/4 varieties. Check out VAMs 36 and 37 to be sure. The weakness around the eagle's tail above the olive branch, and some artifacts underneath the olive branch at left may indicate these. Look for doubling around "we" and date position. This coin may be too worn to see any of the polishing lines, but those also are used in some attributions.

OK, took out my trusty Nikon-D60 with macro lens and, lo and behold, came up with this: Looks like massive doubling! I'll stay with VAM-38 here.

Maybe this thread needs to be in the VAM subforum, too?
