Nice coin! I'd say VF-30 details, a bit of weakness of strike on the face...with a few areas of porosity.

If you are basing Details off of the spots, that is not corrosion. In hand the surfaces have a smooth matte gray even finish that show no evidence of cleaning.

It's grainy look of the darker areas that have me a bit concerned, though certainly very mild and only marginally distracting. Much better than most for sure. Are you going to send it into a TPG? |

Well I paid 227 for it so I don't know if that's a fair price if I send it away and it comes back VF30 Details

I agree with VF30 details. Based on your photos alone, and not having the coin in hand, I would have to say any reputable TPG would call that coin corroded. It is a nicely detailed DBLC though! swcoin.ecrater.com

The black specks and spots are some kind of crust. Under a microscope, there is no surface pitting. I'll try my best to get photos rather than scans tomorrow. I'll probably send it to ANACS to get a numerical grade if the general consensus is that the coin is "problem".

NICE!!  I need me onnathese... what do you think Verm, will I find myself one at the Coin Show Thursday for under $20? (I know, I know, I'll keep dreaming) I'm kinda surprised this is what a 30 looks like. I figured this was closer to 20... AH - but I see that by the definition in the eye, neck, and bust, it's a 30. Photograde and my reading of the Red Book grading scale were in disagreement ( Red Book just speaks vaguely about hair)... All good learning. And nicely bought at $227! You're my hero! |

Yeah, I think the TPGs are a bit lenient on the earlier cents grade-wise, and I'm certainly not an expert in grading them. I still think it has mild corrosion, but may get into a problem free slab if the graders are in an extra good mood.  |

I can't get the photo of the bust right but I believe the lines in the drapes are weak in part due to wear and a weak strike.
