What's Up With The Edge Or Rim Of This Coin?

rubyfruit38 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 08/08/2010 6:02 pm I have a 1697 Continental French Bronze medal by J Mauger. The medal is commemorating the capture of Barcelona. The obverse is a bust of Louis XIV. The reverse is Hercules leaning on his club, the shield of the city of Barcelona lying at his feet. The Legend reads: Binis Castris Deletis (Two hostile camps defeated); and Barcino Capta (Barcelona taken). The year reads M-DCXCVII. But what's up with the edge/rim? My uncle speculates the coin was picked up in Europe during WWII and either there (like trench art) or later here in the US, was carefully hammered or machine lathed to preserve a relatively even edge/rim.
