Hi all,

what are some good sources of Australian pre-decimal coins apart from buying them or from the grandparents?

Thanks,
Ozzie

I think the best place to buy coins is a coin show. The reason for this is that there are many dealers you can talk to in one day, and there is a far greater volume of stock on display and for sale then you would see at a single dealer, or at an auction.

It depends where you are Ozzie. Coin Shows are a good place but sometimes it's a once a year occurrence and that's a long time to wait for a 'fix'. Roughly whereabouts are you? Capital city, country town x k's from Capital city? No need to give us the exact location.

Local coin clubs often have member auctions approx every 3 months I think, I can't recall how much Pre-dec stuff they've had though.

I haven't been able to get to my 2 local Brisbane club meets for over 2 years, so I'm a bit out of touch.

Hi Nancy,
I am in Perth, Western Australia. I have found it difficult getting to the local annual coin shows.Thats why I'm looking for other sources.

Thanks,
Ozzie

Ozzie

As I'm sure you're aware there is a small selection of coin dealers in Perth. Whenever I visit a city I always check the Find a Dealer option on the ANDA (Australian Numismatic Dealers Association) Website before I go so I know what dealers are in the area and on a recent visit to Perth I visited a couple.

I picked up a Kiwi Pre-Decimal from Mickel Smits Stamps & Coins in the London Court Arcade and they had a selection of affordable Australian Pre-Decimals too. At the higher end of the market is Sterling & Currency in Fremantle, who mainly deal over the web, but they do have a shop and Andrew there is very approachable and has an extensive library too. There's also the Rare Coin Company, who have a couple of shops in the area including one near the Perth Mint. Good luck with the hunt!
