I have found a 58D Lincoln Penny where the D top is higher than the descender of the 9. All others that I have looked at, the D is well below the date. I have not found any referensce to this varietal on searching.

First of all Welcome to the CCF forum.

The mint marks until 1990 we added on the dies with a punch. Each die's mint mark location would be below the date between the rim and bust. These were punched in the die by hand. The location would be varied. After 1990 they were part of the master dies. So the location of these would be in the same fixed place. So location of a mint marks on pre 1990 coins could be in the area I mentioned.

How many pennies does the mint get out a die before it's worn out and replaced? Meaning how many other cents are out there with this peculiar mint mark.
