I got this from my grandma and I wanted to know how much its worth, what it is, and some history behind it. Thanks for all the help.

James, I changed the [img] tags you had to [url] tags, because that URL you gave isn't for a graphics file.

As for your item, it appears to be an early token, not a coin. I'm not familiar enough with the series to tell whether it's a "store card" or "hard times token"; hopefully our token experts can assist further. But in the meantime, a picture of the other side too might be helpful.

From what I found it is an 1837 Half Cent token . Here is one I found online http://www.collect1.coinsandstamps....lf_cents.htm. Scroll to 1837 Half Cent token issue and it would be Half Cent Worth of Pure Copper, U.S. Standard Weight & Value. This would be known as a hard times token. You might be able to check ebay and see if any have sold recently for a real market value.
