Come on people- if having and even cleaning these coins is going to bring them happiness and something to be proud of, who are we to say that what they're going to do is wrong or right? I don't think that's our call. It's sort of like the coin jewelry discussion- everyone has the right to make their own choice in what they do with their coins, or anything they own for that matter.

I agree, they are their coins, they can do what they want with them. With that being said, I would still like to see them make an informed decision. When I first got into coins, I had no idea you weren't supposed to clean them. I lost a couple of hundred dollars because of my ignorance. Boy I wish there was someone there then telling me not to clean them.

NOOOOOO! Not the dreaded polishing, anything but that! Somebody should tell those girls that cleaning them severely reduces the value! But if they do wish to keep the coins for themselves and NOT sell them... well then I guess that's their own decision on what to do with them. Congratulations to the two for such a find!

Quote: Just wait til these girls' grandchildren get a display case full of "shiny coins" and find out they are worth melt! Ouch! On the bright side, it is conceivable that these coins will be worth melt regardless of condition by the time their grandchildren get them.

Well, look what I have stumbled across. I am the mother of one of the "famous finders" who are going to "polish" the "rusty" coins.
We find this absolutely facinating the publicity this is finding. We had no idea people would care about this story. There is no polishing of coins, we did talk to a local dealer who told us how to clean them since they were a little muddy.
The story was the words of the reporter. We were not pleased when she had the girls drop the coins.
We were notified by the news station who originally did the segment with the girls that their news desk has been overwhelmed with people wanting this story and they have been getting calls from coast to coast. I heard today this was on a TV station in Jacksonville Florida! WOW!
My grandfather is a coin collector. So I know a little about coins. However, the news station wants to do a follow up with us, and want us to have the coins "appraised". Not sure if we can trust anyone around here.
So I turned to this site and found our story! WOW! Do any of you have suggestions as to what we should do as far as getting the coins appraised? My husband bought a book and they eye magnifier thing so we can see details. Don't know how far to go or where to take them.

Well, posting the denominations, dates and mint-marks here is a good place to get started. At the very least, we can give you an idea of which ones are the most valuable, and which are pretty much just worth the silver content.

Welcome to the forum! Educating yourself is the best thing you can do, and I see you have already started by picking up a book. May I ask which one you picked up? In a nutshell, appraising coins largely depends on a coin's grade, unless you have a super super rare coin. Rarity is also important; the number of coins minted by year, by year and the mint where the coin was produced, and different varieties (i.e. Type 1 or Type 2 Standing Liberty quarter, doubled dies, overdates, etc). Depending on the book you have, you may not have a comprehensive list of different varieties. Grading is a measure of the condition of a coin, MS-70 being the highest possible grade a coin can receive. Grading is tricky, different denominations are graded based on different criteria. Take your time, have fun and ask lots of questions! And remember....

Welcome palmersr! If you have access to a digital camera with a macro setting(flower icon) or a flatbed scanner, post some pictures and we can help you with grades and values.

I am happy to learn that you are not cleaning the coins. I don't know why I ever believe anything I hear on the news! I suppose the book that you got will help with the values for the coins but please come back here and -- if you can -- post pictures. You will find plenty of people here that are eager to help. You can gather all the information you need to make your own appraisal.

Whew! Glad to hear that the coins are not going to get polished. I was just so sad to think that these girls would polish the coins when they didn't know better, only to find out years later that they might have cost themselves hundreds or thousands of dollars when they wanted to sell them if there were some rare dates in there. Glad to hear this was a media mistake.
