I am the mother of one of the "famous finders" who are going to "polish" the "rusty" coins.

My grandfather is a coin collector. So I know a little about coins. However, the news station wants to do a follow up with us, and want us to have the coins "appraised". Not sure if we can trust anyone around here.

to CCF!

I am so glad that you found us. It would be awesome if when the reporter comes back for a "follow up" if you would mention our family of coin collectors, and how you can learn how to care for coins and learn more about what your coins are from our collective knowledge.

Your most valuable find is the youngsters that are actually a major part of the future of this hobby. I sure hope they try to learn a little bit more about their coins rather than how much they are worth to some dealer.

We have an awful lot of fun and camaraderie with each other on here and also make some very trustworthy friends over time that help each other to not get taken advantage of and how to properly preserve the pieces of history we acquire.

Best wishes on behalf of the coin community. We always are excited and especially helpful to newcomers to the hobby here.
I hope that the girls join as you have. We do have young numismatists here that continue to learn and contribute to the best coin forum on the Internet.
Unfortunately many stories are told here that do not have such a happy outcome.

Oh, and another thing I think can help you. If you have a camera and can take images of the coins, we have a section that you can get a good idea of what the grades are and maybe even some estimates on the values.
Nobody is out to get those coins. Most people here feel cleaning, polishing and banging coins together is as pleasant as hearing fingernails scratching across a chalkboard.

Great story! I love/hate to hear things like this. Love it cause it always brightens my day to know coins like that are still out there waiting to be found. Hate it because I haven't found any caches like that yet.
Buy I am happy for those girls and their family. Hopefully it'll lead to a lifelong hobby that's enjoyable and possibly fortuitous.
