The best way is not letting anyone know you are even interested in the stuff.

Someone coming to my place wouldn't even spend the time looking for PM's too many easy things like guns, tools, electronics etc.

Since they don't know I have PM's I doubt they are going to take the time to look.

I would think it would be easy to paint some 100 oz chunks of silver to match the color of the bricks in your basement. Then it would be no problem hiding those brick in the walls of your house. I mean really what robber goes to the basement and says " lets steal that dirty brick?"

I saw a couple on the dooms day show who literally had more holes in their backyard then a ground hog could have dug, all packed with nice pvc pipes full of gold an silver....

For the reason Ed stated about his family members long lost stash of PMz, buried an lost an forgotten to the world forever most likely, I would pass on this technique. Like the pirates treasures out there still perhaps, via all the pirates getting captured an executed later, with no one left alive to know where their treasures were buried....

There must literally be 10,000 of cases where something like that or Ed's family story has happened....

I see stories often these days where a handyman stumbles onto a stash of gold coins or whatever, happens all the time....

One fellow I saw had 3 million in mint really old early 1900's comics, all with like 10 cent price tags. Some of the earliest know to exist an since they were all in top graded shape, they all brought like 2 or 3 grand each. They had just been sittin in the back of his closet, an he knew they had value, but was shocked to learn what they were really worth. You just never know....

Security through obscurity works 24/7 and doesn't cost a dime.

That's the main reason I love this forum. This is the ONLY place I EVER talk about coins and bullion socially.
Rest in Peace

Besides a hollow table leg, you can cast bullets out of them.

I don't do gold at all if I can help it. The only coins that have ever been stolen from me were gold. I had a gathering at my house celebrating the mint, and a display of over 100 custom fantasy coins that I had made. Three were gold. All guests were invited friends. At the end of the day only three coins were missing.

There's something creepy about gold, some bizarre and immoral effect that it has on human psychology. It has been referred to as "karmic plutonium".

I can only imagine how disappointed you must have felt following that theft. Difficult circumstances can drive friends and even family to errors in judgement like this. Knowing this certainly doesn't excuse the act or remove the sense of betrayal, though. Given how unique and identifiable your work must be, it was obviously a desperate act.

I don't agree that gold or jewels or really any *precious* item is the villain here. Society has always promoted a distorted view of money (real or fiat). Motive, opportunity, and poor judgement (on the thief's part) is the real culprit here. Human nature is the limiting factor that we have to consider when deciding what to share about our work, lives, and hobbies with others. I think that's why so many of us here on the forum share so little about our collecting outside of the anonymity of the online world.

I know! How about storing some of your gold in a knot hole in a tree?
Most people have thought of burying at least some of their stash, but nobody thinks about trees! Put a small bomb over the top of the gold, with you the only person who knows the disarming code of the bomb.

If you see the tree split asunder, you can make a safe bet that the person who tried to steal your gold has been too! As a bonus, it would save on court and jail expenses for the taxpayer as well!

What about putting them in PVC tubes, then embed them in a concrete block?

That could work well, just don't forget EXACTLY where they are should you later decide to build something out of them.

Because the cost of importing such a beast from Oz and feeding it would drive us to the poor-house? lol
