Indeed so, MK, but it was certainly an important question that created a lot of thoughtful replies.

As to securing gold and other valuables, I concur that anonymity is a powerful shield that all of us can and should use. After that come the layers of protection that we can add. These include security systems, safes, dogs, proper lighting in and around our property, proper landscaping, motion sensors, etc. By layering these defenses, grabbing our goodies becomes more and more difficult and time consuming... just the things that thieves hate most.

Dogs are great for security, especially indoor dogs that a thief can't simply poison by throwing some tainted food over a fence and waiting for one's guardians to be silenced. Thinking like a thief, the sound of angry dogs from within a dwelling would get me fixated on a less problematic target pretty quickly. Even little yippers are a good enough countermeasure, as any criminal knows the noise can potentially get the attention of owners or even one's neighbors.

"a bit odd as the OP of this thread passed :("

It it is a weird feeling to see the words an thoughts of one who has now left us, but that is why it is important to go back from time to time an dust of some of these older threads and remember. So as to bring into prospective not only the wise thoughts of someone who is no longer with us, via their posts become who they were in a way an all that remains of their views. But also to see what we were thinking silver was gonna do for example in June, a post made sixth months ago an long forgotten by most, including myself who started it, lol....

For a large percentage of most that ever live on this planet, once the last person who's lives you may have impacted in a positive way are all dead an gone, then you no longer live even in legend, an you are truly gone an forgotten, just is what it is....

As the way it should be as like I have said often once you leave here, anything you may have said, done, or seen, matters no longer. Its dust in the wind eh and your off to the next journey, lol....

Nice bit of tradecraft there, SilverBug. Assuming you didn't need daily access, adding a very thin strip of adhesive backed laminate (or maybe just brown tape) to the top would make things exceptionally difficult to detect.

You could stash quite a few $5 AGEs or 1/10th Krugs in there.

The gap where the curtain-rod slides in to suspends one's curtains would hide a few virtually unnoticed. Probably not a thief's typical target of interest. Spread out over an entire household...

Agreed. A small but noisy dog can be a great deterrent to any thief who wants to go about his business quietly. Our neighbors have a Jack Russell terrier and he has outstanding hearing. Nothing gets by that little guy... all 12 lbs. of him. Such a dog won't do any damage to a thief but waking up the homeowner with his 12-gauge certainly will.

I guess it all depends on how tall the tube is.

I didn't do it. I just saw some tips online and copy pasted it here. another good one is an empty wall socket...

Just don't hide ANYTHING in a room heating vent. Countless teen angst movies and TV shows have ruined this hiding spot forever.

The only problem with hiding stuff is that you may end up dying without telling anybody where it's all hidden or get Alzheimer's and just forget where you hid everything. Unless, of course, you tell other people about it or write it down somewhere, which kind of defeats the purpose of hiding it in the first place...

That's why some of us prefer to use safe deposit boxes over home storage.
