Hi all,

I want to expand my world coin collection, which is now mainly bronze and copper nickel, to higher value coins, specifically silver coins. However, most of the silver coins on ebay look like they have been cleaned. Take for example many of this sellers coins: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-Paper...lo=&_udhi=50

But I don't know anything about silver coins. Can you give me any pointers?

Well, for example this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Victoria-Yo...em1c1fa94448 and this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Edward-VII-...em1c1fa94f77. They're over 100 years old but the toning is so brilliant and there is hardly any smudge.

I'm also new to collecting (about three years) but let me see if I can help. I have a numis veteran offering me advice.

Reasons for cleaning a coin - verdigris for a big one and PVC contamination for another. Tarnish? Not so much.

Verdigris: this is the green patina that usually affects copper coins but can also infiltrate silver coins, too. This will only spread and worsen as a coin ages. Bad.

PVC - Polyvinyl chloride is a soft plastic that can infiltrate a coin's surface and cause pitting and other defects. Also, bad.

Tarnish can add toning to a coin. Most collectors will tell you, do not clean a coin simply to remove tarnish. This will lower its value. Not advisable.

Cleaning coins is a very tricky thing and I would not just use any OTC remedy or one you might find posted. I would go to a coin dealer and discuss a "professional" cleaning if the coin is grossly contaminated.

PCGS will not grade contaminated coins, but will grade tarnished coins.

I hope this answer helps.
