1843 Half Dime: Undiscovered Variety, Or Optical Illusion?

rexvictor Valued Member United States 115 Posts	Posted 10/22/2011 5:26 pm Hello everyone, I bought this 1843 Half Dime today. Although I was shopping for Seated dimes, it really caught my eye. It has a lovely dark toning with hints of dark blue and a metallic look with underlying reflectivity to the surfaces. Please take a look at the photos, which puzzle me a bit. Why does it look like there is a "W" on the upper right area of the shield just above "LIBERTY"? If you have an opinion about the grade, please let me know. I really like the appearance of this coin, but it is a challenge to photograph well. Report this Post to the Staff

Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 10/24/2011 10:48 am It has an interesting appearance but I think you will find that it is just the top of the sixth vertical red stripe. The W appearance is either an illusing or the result of damage. The picture isn't good enough to tell which. Report this Post to the Staff

I tried my scanner and here is the an image that pretty much agrees with all of the rest. It was done at 4800 dpi, which seems a little more crisp than at 9600 dpi.
