Bromberg is only trying to sell his coins on the Shopping Network, perhaps this is why he's making these false stats. The only way there could be 2 million coin collectors in Canada is if 99.9% of them collect N.C.L.T. coinage and anything else but Canadian coins. Can you picture 2 million collectors hunting for Canadian coins between the years 1858-1960? There is barely enough decent material to satisfy the craving of the few hundred that do collect 'em! Neilson toilet flushes.Guaranteed within 8%, not all of the time.Unfortunately, he does sell lots of stuff from circulation 1858-1960 which may be a good investment if you don't mind waiting 3 generations.

I collect Canadian as it's my heritage and I like to collect. The bonus to collecting Canadian coins in the USA is that I have gotten a lot of excellent deals because dealers don't know Canadian and don't know how to grade Canadian. To be truthful, when I am traveling and I stop by a dealer, I inquire about other dealers in the area, if a guy says go talk to ABC, he has a lot of Canadian. I think to myself, someone to avoid if only because he charges too much.

Ok I don't know Steven Bromberg But Me thinks his number to be high, putting coins in a drawer is not coin collecting thats setting coins aside. The question would be hard ,the Mint would be a decent source as would numbers from coin clubs. It is of interest to me, hope RCM responds with some numbers.

I think it would all come down to the definition of "collector". There's no doubt that most of the members of this forum are collectors. In fact many would be hard-core collectors. Same with most members of the coin clubs throughout Canada. But, what about the many folk who pull a few pretty coins out of circulation, and set them aside indefinitely? Are they collectors? Because if that is the definition, then my guess is that there are at least 2 million of them. What's the population of Canada these days? About 34 million? So, if one in 17 Canadians puts aside a nice coin from time to time, and is considered a collector, then you have 2 million collectors.

It would be easy to ascertain the number of people active and members of local coin clubs, screen, by poll, for those in multiple clubs, etc, the part that is difficult is figuring out how many collectors are out there that are not members of any coin related club. And while we ponder that, Glenzy has a point, what you collect vs what someone else collects. The number only has relevance when it relates to what you collect. If I collect only 5cent pieces and another guy collects only silver dollars the value of pennies and how many people collect them is of little relevance to us.

I have a few pieces of Canadian coins. My late grandfather sold a h.o. set of trains for a mans complete set back in the 50's. I only got a few pieces from him. Mostly early cents and a few large cents. I have picked up a few early date nickels and a few silver pieces which I sold.

OK. I want to throw my oar into the pool here. As #13. I've been collecting, mainly Canadian coins, for nigh onto more years I'm willing to admit. Just now trying to learn more about my addiction. Hope you'all are up to answering my questions the next little while.

I collect Canadian coins - mostly ones that I can pull out of rolls here in the US - so I am getting a pretty good penny collection.

Possibly 2 million coin collectors in Canada. Actual Numismatic coin collector in Canada I would quess to be more like 200,000 or less. Everyone at some time in there life puts a few coins away in a piggy bank or sock drawer. But in my 40 years of collecting, have seldom found there to be very many true numismatic coin collectors in Canada. I'll be #14.

I concur with wireman09, having a 200 lbs penny jar is not coin collecting, I would define a collector as somebody who is at least trying to catalog his collection, keep it somewhat organized and once in a while actively trying to fill holes in the collection. Count me in at #15
