Morgans Dad Pillar of the Community United States 5647 Posts	Posted 11/10/2011 4:40 pm I would like to ask some seasoned vammers to help with this coin, I have what I believe is an EDS of the VAM 32A and according to the VW descriptions the "IN" from the reverse is very pronounced, which on my coin it clearly is, also the "ST" from the reverse word TRUST is visible. I also see on the reverse clearly, very visible the clashed letter "M" from the obverse under Anna's portrait and above the date the designer's initial, However I can NOT see the mentioned clashed letter "E" from the word " WE" on the obverse "in the hair curls" I was thinking some experienced Morgan collectors could possibly lend a thought or two as to the exact location of this letter's clashed position, like I stated earlier I believe I have a fine example PCGS ms-63, IMO, EDS. aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 11/11/2011 12:08 am Hey Dad, If you have the smashed wing and the IN clash and the M/st clashes you have the VAM 32A for sure,,, The "e" clash you are referring to in the hair locks will "NOT BE A FULL" letter transfer as the other letters can be,,, The area in question is directly above the second 8,sometimes referred as the bear claws, about 2/3rds up into the locks...you will notice between the locks The locks them selves are deep into the die so they are below surface level. so there is no way to have any impression of clashing in the hair locks them selves, yet "between" the hair locks is FLAT and at surface level...The only "portion" of the E transfer will be the horizontal part of the written letter the short line of the E and none of the rest as it it falls over the dies hair lock depressions, lower than the surface level of the die so the full letter cannot be seen....The E clash of the reverse "WE" is not shown on photo's at VAM world, however I have seen other coins that do have photo's of the area in question, so you would know exactly what your looking for, it would take some viewing of a lot of dates to find one,, I have one, but forget the date,, As for an EDS state, The clash appears to be only one super strong clash in which all those letter features happened at the same time...If there were multiple clashes or appearences and disapearences of letter transfers due to polishing or additional die breaks within the dies life....I could see an EDS or LDS examples.....So I think you have a very nice solid 1880 Vam32A just need to find another example of the E clashed/hairlocks coin to know exactly what to look for on your coin..Gene Report this Post to the Staff
Morgans Dad Pillar of the Community United States 5647 Posts	Posted 11/11/2011 11:36 am Gene, I hope you are well, I see the portion of the letter sunken between the hair curls, I originally thought this spot was a remnant of the die polishing as seen in a few areas, I appreciate your input and, I really would agree to dis-agree about the EDS and LDS theory, as even after the first coin struck, after the initial clash, the "imprints" from the clash are lessened more and more after each strike, no? I say EDS because the photos from the other site show a more weakened imprint of the entire clash, leading me to believe that the plate being shown is NOT an EDS....... It would not be the first time I was wrong, Thanks again. PS, The "M" clash is the first time I have actually seen this letter in all it's glory, in full, this is a very busy coin..... aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 11/12/2011 12:21 am loggin night mare and 3rd attempt to post,,,I'm fine Mike and nice to hear from you again.. super wow coin you found, it has all the trimmings and so busy with strong clashes of almost every type there could be,,, And I agree the crisp and strong strikes will diminish over time, but they will all diminish at the same level not just one portion or feature...The "E" is a hard one to capture just right to show its clear and clean strike, not all photo's on VAM World have it just right, yet capture it, its kind of like the die polishing lines where the light must be spot on. to see there glory, lighting placed slightly left or right they will barely show up and many times just disappear...As far as an EDS..only the many can say in this case where there appears to be only one clashing, if your coin has much crisper definition of all pup's and detail than the coin posted it could very well be an EDS...if its just the E I would think it may just be a lighting issue...you can always send it in!
