You versus the expert: my mentor (who will always go unmentioned as he works for a coin grading service) looked over this coin earlier this week. His grade and the price of the coin at auction after comments by you, my fellow numismatists, have made your assessments.

I am guessing the missing rim on the obverse is from a weak strike so I will say ms62.
Rest in Peace

I also thought cleaned but I am often wrong :) Very nice coin though. Did you say you were going to auction it?

Appraised as follows: AU 50 details. The details he (my mentor) refers to are difficult to find in the photos. He said the piece probably was cleaned... a hundred years ago and put into a piece of jewelry. He said he would have graded it higher except for those "glaring" defects, which he found on close examination. He also informed me that this type of coin could or rather should never be officially slabbed but added, "Who would want to? Any serious collector would want to look at it closely, not stuffed into some plastic box (despite the fact that is what he does)." A thin and fragile coin, the Half Dime frequently suffers from dings and is quickly becoming one of those significant historical rarities. This coin recently sold at auction for.... $45.00!

Thank you, gentlemen, for your honest opinions and appraisals. I always learn a great deal about coins every time I log onto this website.
