I bought a gold filled chain on ebay, seller said is 12 inches long, but in actual length its 24 inches. It weight 12.73 grams to the chain alone, also came with the gold plated 1945 Mercury dime with a fake diamond? CACO 1/20 12K GF is stamped on both the clips.

5% (1/20) of the weight is 50% gold (12k). so virtually no gold value. You would need about 20 dwt (pennyweight) to get about .5 dwt of gold which at 12k would melt for about $17.

In my experience, if you take it to a shop, they won't touch it. It's not worth the time or hassle to separate from the good stuff. Basically, you may be stuck with it if you go to sell.

OK! Thanks.
I paid a total of $16.50 included mail for all, so I am alright with not over paying it.

amida-
You corrected for 12k twice. 20 dwt of new 1/20 12K would be 0.5 dwt pure, or $42 metal content. 12.73g would be 0.41 oz or 0.01 oz pure = $17.89 metal content, not counting a few bucks for the dime and bezel.
Catch #1. No one will pay anywhere near scrap value unless you have have a few dozen pounds of plated stuff.
Catch #2. Calculations are for a new chain. Since the outer 5% of the chain is gold, 5% wear = no gold left, as compared to a solid gold coin, where 5% wear = 5% less gold.

Quote: Catch #1. No one will pay anywhere near scrap value unless you have have a few dozen pounds of plated stuff. I buy bags of "junk" jewelry at antique malls, thrift stores & garage sales because I see one or two items in the lot that are gold, silver, or older collectible costume jewelry. I've been saving all the gold fill from those lots for almost 18 months. I figure in another year or two I'll have enough accumulated to meet my refiners minimum amount.

Another question would be what is the content to the rest of the chain? Do gold filled bound well with other metal like electroplated gold?
Of course silver would be nice, but I doubt that, as to wear the chain doesn't seem to have any scratch, this is still a new territory so I am just testing the water.

Not sure I understand your question. GF is like clad coins. GP is deposited to a finished item.
The reason you see bronzed shoes and not diapers is because fabric just absorbs the plating.

I don't think I have ever seen a fake diamond that small. It's probably real.

The only thing that looks anything like a diamond or glass is the tiny piece in the center, the outer 2 ring are mount decoration? I can't take out the dime from the bezel without damaging both. This is the first time I see anything like it, so that's why I bid on it.

Now I am seeing more of these on ebay but costing more and not giving full detail about what the metal content are.
