I took a silver tetradrachm of Athens, minted in about 450 BC, to show my boss at work once, who happened to be of Greek birth.
He appreciated it with great enthusiasm because he knew exactly what it was. He was acutely aware of it's value, to the extent that he took the coin off me, and put it in the company safe. He personally returned it to me at the end of the day, and told me never to bring it to work again!

At home ...... only to family Out side home .....only to coin collectors at the club and actually I did it only once when I completed the State 100 P & D quarter set because every member wanted to see it and by the way they all loved it (P.S. I knew they would so I actually took it there to show-off more than to show the set.)

I often show off pieces from my collection at coin club meetings.

I do "show and tell" on occassion at work (for those who are interested), and with my family and my best friend who also shares the interest (he is the one who gave me a 1914-D, 31-S, 1899 Silver Certificate, and some others).

On Occasion to close family, who act interested but I can tell they could really care less. Outside of family I've only shared with 3 individuals. I followed that up with sharing of my firearms, and overview of my marksmanship, and a small lecture on the use of Hollow points and laser sighting, and my willingness to use them in the event of a breakin.

My wife doesn't even want me showing the coins to our six-year-old son for fear that he will tell somebody else about them. It kind of sucks the joy out of collecting, but I suppose she is right.
I show them to him anyway, btw...

The wife knows because she helps, the grandkids and my kids know because they eash have their own albums for Canadian and US, but none of them have realy taken off on it yet. The grandkids where told not to say anything to their friends because if they got stoll they would loss their albums also.

Wife has an idea what my collection contains, as she has given me several numismatic gifts over the years; my younger son is also a collector, whereas my older son could care less. I have a couple friends that know I'm a collector, and ask me related questions now and then, but they don't really know what I have. I live in a small city with the typical gang and drug problems, so I'd just as soon not advertise.

My wife and kids know but other than that, I don't share with anyone except here on CCF. My wife helps with my selections at coin shows. Her eyesight is better than mine up close, and mine is better than hers at a distance. So she helps me with the coins, and I help her with driving.

The problem with telling anyone about anything you own of monitary value is people just have to talk, talk, talk. And as anyone knows that has had college courses in phycology, a coin collection can grow, grow, grow each time the story is told. You start out with one little Album and after it's told 10 times you have millions of dollars in coins in your home. Near where I live a guy USED to show his family his few Gold coins. His grandson, on dope, robbed the house and took those coins and lots of other items. One neighbor USED to brag about his coins, not only house robbed but since he really didn't have MILLIONS in coins, the robbers put him in the hospital all stabbed up. Safes too are great but a gun to your families head opens them fast. With todays economy the way it is it is much better to just not say anything about anything of value to anyone.

My wife knows I collect coins but I don't show them to her because she couldn't csare less. The only person I really show my coins to is my brother. He is a silver collector and has a collection of coins he finds from circulation. I show him my coins for three reasons. 1. I need to show them off to someone. 2. He enjoys seeing my collection. 3. I need someone who has at least an idea of my collections value in case something should happen to me. My wife would be able to go to him with my coins instead of selling them at a garage sale.
