I'm selling off most of my relatively modest coin collection and would like opinions from the board as to their experiences with sales through auction companies, ebay, local "Sell us your gold, silver, coins..."-type businesses. Obviously I would like a fair price with minimal cost, so I really could use the collective wisdom of this board. Thanks in advance.

ebay would be better than a "sell us your gold/silver" type place. Just provide good pictures. Only down side is that it takes some time to do it

I believe CCF does consignments. (Button on bar at left)

ebay also takes quite effort, if you have a decent collection. If you inherited the coins and aren't much interested in them, you'll get overwhelmed by the process Oh, not all scrap gold dealers are thieves.

Quote: relatively modest coin collection You really need to do some careful sorting and separating prior to selling. Otherwise you just have a bulk lot which will reduce what you can expect to obtain. Mixing a load of State Quarters, for instance, in with silver and/or collectible coins such as Indian cents and Lincolns, et.al. is not the way to go. ebay is great for coins that you know will sell. Many common things will not because the market is saturated. My local silver buyer is there every week and pays better than the jewelry shops, pawn shops, motel buyers, etc. Do some homework on your better items if you expect good returns. If fast liquidation is important, it does not matter so much how you do it. Good luck.

Wow! I am very impressed with the suggestions re: the pros and cons of various methods of selling coins. Of particular note are the suggestions that I consider what my intentions for a sale are, the downsides of marketing a group of coins, and the wisdom of you guys. Honestly, I am truly impressed and very grateful to all responders!

I have another question which concerns the cleaning of coins. I've always understood that cleaning coins is an absolute no-no. I do have one Morgan silver dollar that was returned from PCGS with the comment "PVC Residue." It is an uncirculated and very pretty coin, and I would like to just remove the PVC and nothing else. Is there a safe and good way to do this?

I believe pure acetone will help remove some of it. Then rinse in distilled water & pat dry. Wait until you are sure that the coin is dry before you put it in a 2x2 or airtight holder. I'm sure others will have some more ideas or even better ones.

My suggestion is the same one I try to give anyone attempting to sell a coin, stamp, etc. collection. First of all you need a certain amount of post to sell here. So I suggest that should be your goal. Acquire what is needed to sell here and you would find the best and most honest deals. Hopefully. Most, never all, of the members of this forum are coin collectors and sort of professionals due to their concerns about coins. 2250 posts appears to be way off int the future but your already started so I suggest you continue here for a while. Second suggestion is to well document exactly what you have in the way of coins before you even consider selling. Know what you have.

Chris12018: Thanks for the suggestion and will try it. And I appreciate the correction to just carl's post (whose post I do appreciate).

By the way, does anyone have any experience with submitting a coin that has been acetone-cleaned to PCGS? I wonder if it would be worth the expense?

You also have to consider the fees associated with ebay and paypal transactions. Choose your sales carefully and price accordingly. There are members on this forum that would love to help and even sort through your collection with you. I have sold coins in every way but cash for coins, I have heard some nightmares of poor weighing and low payout. ebay has been good on higher end stuff and private sales to other collectors have went well. I list some of my low end stuff at a free online auction called WebStore.com with some good success. Anyway you choose go for what feels comfortable and remember most often the book value is just a guide and not set in stone and when selling to a dealer expect even less due to the fact that they need to make a profit too.

FireGuyJoe - Thanks. Haven't heard of Webstore.com, but will look into it for the, as you describe, low end stuff.
