hi All
since I started roll searching coins I have now devoloped an interest in paper money as well. Do you all get money from banks and roll search as a starter or just buy from dealers. I do actually like the search and finding something on my own. Any suggestions to help me get started? any web sites would be a great help too.

I used to work at a store where I had access to the petty cash and register tills. I picked up quite a few radars, repeaters, WEB, stars and birthday notes. Banks are a great place to find "in the wild" notes. I am going to start listing some of them to broaden my 7070 collection fund. Anything in particular that you are looking for?

I've searched $1s and $2s from banks. After that, it gets prohibitively expensive. I'd hopefully search at least $200-500 face value at a time. The more the better. For $5s and larger that's not a large quantity of notes, and makes the return on time / gas / disposal not worth it.

Just like roll-searching, you don't want to dump 100s of bills in the same bank that you pick them up in.

Another option is to make nice with the tellers and they might volunteer their interesting notes. Sometimes they actively remove older notes from circulation 'to be destroyed' but will let you buy them for face.

Some of the best finds posted on the boards come from cashiers that handle cash regularly, which doesn't apply to me.

Start by buying a few nice horse blanket notes. Also the 1899 is always a key note to buy. The Civil War fractional are fun to collect too. The key to to buy notes from dealers you can trust. There are a lot of fakes out there.
