Guys, I have this old $500 Federal Reserve Note, and I've got a question about it. The books I have stipulate the series 1934 has the clause "in gold or lawful money", and with the series 1934A, there is no mention of gold in payment. This particular bill is series 1934, and there is no mention of gold in payment. It's got me confused, and concerned about the validity of the bill. Any help, and/or information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Your series 1934 $ 500. looks just like mine and the one I have does not say anything about Gold, only has the "lawful money" caluse. I think it's real. The Bill Collector
Close. The Series of 1928 had the redeemable in gold or lawful money clause. Having been taken off the gold standard in 1933 the Series of 1934 had the redeemable in lawful money clause. No longer redeemable for gold.
Okay guys - thanks. That does, indeed, make sense - illegal to own private gold the year before, so there would be no mention of it on anything printed in 1934. Not real sure how I got the idea that the series of 1934 had "in gold" , and the series of 1934A didn't - still new to the world of U.S. Paper Money, and still alot to learn. Thanks for your responses.
