Regardless of what anyone else says, don't clean or polish or dip any of your coins in any way or fashion. There is no such thing as cleaning coins "only a little"... nothing ruins the look and value of coins faster than cleaning them, period.

Okay, now that I am totally confused, I better just leave the coins the way they are. No one will see them because I am not gonna show them to anyone in the condition they are in.

I don't why I am ashamed of them, I did not get them in that condition.

Side note: good thing no one can hear me say all this, because my accent would be out of control.

If you ask a thousand collectors, you'll get a thousand different opinions. Here's mine:

Certain conservation operations are acceptable under certain specific conditions. Acetone to address PVC problems, for instance. There is a wealth of accurate information already published on this forum, yet you'll find us rather reticent about sharing it because we fear the misapplication of that information by well-meaning but inexperienced collectors who will then destroy the value of their coins.

Aside addressing ongoing destructive chemical reactions, I will not touch a circulated coin with anything, ever. There are, however, exceptions to even this rule, concerning ancient and dug coins which I don't acquire.

I plan on keeping them. I guess that is my problem. If someone wanted to buy my ugly circulated Buffalo nickels then I would sell. BUT...... since I want to keep them, when I look at them I did not want to cringe. But then again, LincolnGuy, I did not want to damage them, just to take off the black stuff. I do not want to make it shiny and new looking, just presentable.

Is anyone out there willing to post an uncleaned Buffalo? Yours better be bad like mine, otherwise I would not be interested in cleaning them. I will after you do. :p

Well I dont have any nickels so I can help you there. But if your going to keep them and your that bothered with the way they look, then I agree with smokeriderdon. A quick dip will make them look better. I know that will send some of these guys in here out of their chairs, but the fact is they are YOUR coins. I've done it before on coins that I want to keep but are ulgy :) Just remember it will bring their value down.
Also yes photos will help here!

Obviously, we have no dirtfishermen, (or dirtfishing ladies) on this thread.
All of my dug coins get cleaned in one way or another.
I've dipped lots of circulated silver and received more $ on the sale.
I am against the cleaning of any higher end, rare date coins or coins of value, of course.
Just my opinion, we all hold one.

Yes, as others have stated, they are your coins to clean as you see fit. I hear Brasso is good on copper, and what? Comet for nickel and silver?

The really bad buffalo must be hiding from me, but I did take 2 pics of bad nickels and a normal buffalo that I would like my coin to look like.

You can barely tell what it is. The other nickel is also dirty.

Hanging my head in shame, but here they are.

I'm afraid this is a "you can't get there from here" situation, Cajunlady. The two are too badly corroded; although you could conceivably remove it, the result would be distasteful to you.

What do you think of these? How bad are they? What would you do if they were yours? Be honest now!
