Is there a story behind the Morgan ( 1884 O ) or nothing - routine ?   Mintage: 9,730,000

only story is that is was minted in 1884 at the New Orleans mint. Its not a scarce date as you can find full rolls of 1884-O Morgans still, so nothing really exciting to say about the date/mm combination. I have one in PCGS MS-66 that I believe I paid less then 300 dollars for a few years ago. PCGS's coinfacts says this about the date/mm Quote:
Common in prooflike as well as DMPL. Most have cameo contrast and are in lower grade levels, although many high-grade coins exist as well.Tens of thousands survive totally. The second most common (after 1883-CC) Carson City dollar with PL or DMPL finish.
Characteristics of striking: Usually seen well struck. Known hoards of Mint State coins: Bags of 1,000 coins were released by the Treasury in 1938, the mid-1950s, and early in the 1960s; 962,638 were held back from 1962-1964 Treasury release and subsequently sold by the General Services Administration. Over 1,000,000 Mint State coins remain. |

There are a few interesting O/O varieties for this date - you'll see them as lines inside the mint mark, and a couple have curved remnants of the first mint mark strike outside the O.

You sure you didn't look up 84cc? None of those references apply to 84o.

You didn't ask for a grade ('cause you obviously know it), but I'm thinking 65 for this one?

But everything I said above the quote is true about the 84-O. I would edit it out but then your comment wouldn't make much sense so I am leaving it. Whenever I read it I thought to myself "that is rather rare for a New Orleans Morgan in PL and DMPL" but figured I would paste it anyway. Thats what I get for trying to do the forum thing while I have company and being distracted |

The obverse appears to be in the upper percentile as far as the strike goes. I can't make out the feathers on the only shot of the reverse. I will say I like this one.  |

Larry, that's a stonkin' strike for a New Orleans coin. Far date, mint mark shifted right, clashed reverse. Has a shot at 64, but the fields are skritchy. Have a look at the reeding - I didn't mention this to the OP because his coin is slabbed - but 1884-O's have some varieties with overlapping reeding. You'll see it instinctively if it's there.
