I found this coin while roll hunting. Is there any way to know if its struck on a cent planchet other than by weighing it? Any suggestions/advice or just comments about the coin would be greatly appreciated. thanks!  |

What year is the nickel? It just looks like a dark nickel.
Since a cent is smaller than a nickel, it wouldn't be the same size or thickness as a nickel and the details around the outer part of the nickel would be missing.

Here is a great example of a nickel struck on a cent planchet: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1981P-Grade...t_538wt_1031There are a few on ebay that are definite fakes. They are an altered nickel, since the surrounding edge looks like it was shaved to reduce the size. Keep looking and don't give up. There are quite a few error coins out there that are waiting to be found. |

If you weigh it, and it is 5 grams it's a nickel ( which I think it is ) and if it is a cent planchet it will be a little over 3 grams.

i have seen hundreds of dark nickels.. I only posted this because it actually has a copper color and sounds different than all the other nickels when flipped in the air. Is it possible that someone used chemicals that melted some metal away to expose copper, the detail of the coin is very rounded, not worn down.

My opinion ...
It is not struck on a cent planchet ... and whatever you are seeing is the result of post-mint action.
Suggest the $20 purchase of a scale that can weigh to a resolution of 0.01 grams ... then you can know for sure.

so if it was real, the coin will be the exact size of a penny, nickel, or somewhere in between?

Inbetween. Since the cent planchet is smaller and not restrained it will spread out larger than a cent but will not end the same size as a nickel. The OP coin shows the full diameter all the way around, and the rimms are well filled. From the pictures, which show the edge, the coin appears to be the normal thickness as well. This is just a discolored coin.

Yeah--feral coin!  Since US nickels are 75% copper, the right environmental conditions can affect the copper, turning the coin dark. |
