This one is a 8 soles from Bolivia, after the country got freed from spain by Simon Bolivar. This one fits well in my goal of getting a post-spanish coin from each south american country :)
Cool coin. I have wanted one of those since I first discovered the type, and finally found a nice one at the local coin show this past week. Mine's an 1827.
10xloupe : yeah, the lamas look like a child did the drawing :) mysilveryears : could you post yours ? markn : Thanks :D it comes from the same "treasure" from which I got my mexican early zacatecas coin - a clay bottle found in the Chamizo river, in Florida, Uruguay (not the american Florida :p).
Sure; happy to show it. The book I have indicates it is the first year for the type. Please excuse my poor table top photography. This coin shows very little wear and still has luster. Actual size= 38mm.
Wow, yours is better than mine for sure :) It's a beautiful example. Both seems to have a weak strike though (strong strike are very scarce for this type) And you are right, the date you own is the first year for this coin ! Here is a "complete" one : http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/B...S_JM_8_soles
Here is my version of the coin I recently bought. Do any of you know if this is genuine? It has some toning but also some nice detail. There are also letters on the coin edge, one side says "SUCRE" the capital of bolivia, I am guessing your coins also have some of this edge markings?
