The fact that there are luster bands on the 10:00-4:00 axis tells me that 1) your photo setup is capable of showing luster, and 2) the coin is at least in AU territory. Since the luster is strong in the protected areas next to the rim but fades out in the open areas, I think the coin has seen light circulation. I also see a bit of rub on Liberty's right thigh. The strike is not as crisp as your 1862 quarter. I'd give this one an AU-55.

I figured actually that the coin was impaired by an old wipe (which was why the luster was impaired in certain areas) but has never circulated, there doesn't look to be any rub to me and that might just be lighting. I 'netted' it to MS-62 based on that. It doesn't look like a typical AU-55 to me.

So by Olympic grading standards, we throw out the high and the low and this one comes in at AU-58, well above your album threshold. Your grandfather did this coin thing quite well.

BTW, I know I've read a few posts on this board that implied/said Seated Liberty grading standards can be a bit soft, definitely not the other way around. By that they meant the grades come back a bit higher than perhaps absolute strict adherence to grading criteria would yield. I don't have enough experience with the series validate that though.
Rest in Peace

I'd say solid for AU-55. I'd go higher if there was more luster visible. No way is this VF/XF imo, not even close.
