rawdod New Member United States 5 Posts	Posted 02/02/2012 5:31 pm Howdy, I am a newbie to coin collecting, today I got my first gold US type coin, a 1861 quarter eagle. Its clearly been cleaned or molested in some way, altho I am not sure exactly what. Its very shiny and somewhat 'not sharp', mainly on the face side. I got it for $270 today which is $58 over spot at this moment. I am not that worried that its been cleaned, I am just trying to learn more about it. After looking at it for some time I noticed that the front hair on the neck is totally missing. I took some webcam images, not the clearest shots but probably enough for you experts to give me a pointer. I weighted the coin and it is 4.112 grams, and the diameter is exactly 18mm so I am not suspecting its a phoney coin. BH1964 Bedrock of the Community United States 10982 Posts	Posted 02/03/2012 12:54 am Weight and diameter are good so, unless the coin is overly thick, it's likely genuine. It was heavily polished at some time and may have been a jewelry piece. Quarter-eagles usually bring a premium over melt unless damaged. $58 over melt is a bit high but not too bad.
