Hi, Here are some of my last acquisitions - those coins are emergency issues and carry the same typical style (simple design, simple stamps). I'll update this thread with other coins, and for the first one with real pictures (I'm waiting for some free time for it - this coin is excellent and has an interesting edge as well) The first ones were made during the war with the French Napoleon I which took over most of the north of spain. Some cities were either holding siege or were isolated from the rest of Spain, and issues coins during this period. Gerona staid free for a while, while Madrid and Barcelona had been taken by Napoleon. It became French during less than a year, between May 6th 1809 till December 12th 1809, in order to secure a fallback path to France from Spain. 5 pesetas de Tarragona - 1809 : This was the first spanish pesetas - if you don't count the Napoleon I issues (which can be considered French :p) 1 duro de Gerona - 1808 : This next emergency issue were made on the Majorca island, during an epidemic yellow fever which killed many. They were made between November 11th 1821 till December 31th 1821 in the Bellveder castillo using blanks made from melted silver taken from the island churches. 30 sous de Majorca - 1831 (I think I posted that one already, not sure) : Edited by MathieuMa 02/15/2012 04:10 am

Those are cool, neat history. At our coin club just the other month we were talking about siege money. It was interesting to see coins made out of silver tableware.

I just saw some odd ones made of silver plates on the following blog, while checking for documentation. It's impressive indeed : http://obsidional.blogspot.com/2011...au-1702.htmlI wish I had a coin club near my location :/ (although I'm not sure spanish coins would be their first coins in France ... except for the Napoleon period maybe or catalan coins)

Great coins! I like these emergency issues very much, as there is a lot of history behind them.
Admittedly, I don't know much about the history of the Spanish mainland and the numismatics around the French invasion, as I have limited my collection interests to Mexican coins (house to pay off and kids to feed, the usual suspects :-)

Nice bunch, Mathieu. I've always liked these emergency issues, as well. From what I remember, the dentils on the Duro was done by hand for every single coin, so no 2 are alike.

A new chap was just added to the list : 5 pesetas from Majorca, minted in 1823 This one is not an emergency issue, but it was minted in Majorca according to medieval customs of minting regional coins. It's a regional issue.

great history - wonderful coins. I'm trying to put together a set of French coins - including the Empire - of 1811.

Peter THOMAS : I'm French, but I collect spanish coins :) I have some Napoleons from Spain though, around 1811 (Barcelona and Madrid) I have my first collection or French coins left in my parent's home, but most of the coins there are after Napoleon. Some designs there are very nice :)
tokenmast : thanks for the pictures :) I got a "big" canon Camera, but without proper macro lens, I use a small automatic camera ... which gives quite nice results :) I was also impressed by the Tarragona edge - I didn't knew it was like that when I bought it. It's indeed a very well crafted design, IMHO the best I've seen so far as well.

I also collect these Spanish emergency issues. I would post mine but your images, with edge views and all, would put my scans to shame. Cheers, Bill

No worry, feel free to post your pictures :) I did those using a regular digital camera - to get good lighting I use morning's natural light (I put a tissue on my first floor window, with the coin on it, a bit elevated to face the sun) You can get beautifull results with artificial light, but I don't have any good lights for that at home (they are all too yellow) Oh, and for the edge, I take the coin in hand (some will bash me for not wearing gloves - I take care to have clean / non wet - dirty - greasy hands) - make the focus on the coin's face, put the coin a bit backward so the edge is at about the same place where the focus was done and ... shoot the picture) This is the camera I use then : http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonictz5(I also have that expensive one - but without proper macro lens : http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1dmkii)

You have the 1D MKII and you're shooting with a point and shoot? Shame on you :) I use Canon 5D MKII with a 105 sigma macro lens and loving it! Let me know if you want some tips with regards to coin photography and 1D.
