I received this Thai medal (along with many others) from my grandfather and although auctions have similar pieces I would really appreciate the opinion of an experienced numismatist. More info is available if anybody might be able to assist me.

Follow the above link. It appears to be the same one.

It was designed by August Patey and struck in 1897 at the Paris Mint.

That one sold for $1600 US in January of 2006, plus buyer's fee.

The warm-incandescent lighting in this photograph is quite misleading as the medal is in fact silver.

Are there are "checks" available to verify the authenticity of Thai medals specifcally?

I think PCGS and NCG grade and authenticate world medals. There are other companies, but these are the only two that I know are reputable.

I bet that medal is quite a sight in person.
