Hi everyone: I recently purchased this coin from a coin dealer at my local flea market: I paid $1 under spot for the coin. The coin is a 1962 Washington quarter which is supposed to weigh 6.25 grams but weighs 6.31 grams on my scale which can accurately weigh up to 0.01 grams. Is this weight difference normal? Thank you for your help

Correction, this is a 1961 quarter not 1962. Sorry.

You could always preform a drop test since its not a grade worthy coin. Just drop it on a surface and you can usually tell. Theres a difference between the noise clad makes and what silver makes. Good luck.

to the forums. I see nothing wrong with this coin. Just the standard wear from a 50 year old coin from being in circulation.

I find that a rather attractive coin. It wears the patina well, particularly the obverse.

are non-key fake silver quarters common anyways?

Looks normal to me. I'm not sure why someone would bother to fake a common date quarter. Unless it's not silver, they would have to expend a lot more energy than they would make back in profit.

Can't you check to make sure the coin isn't magnetic?
I once bought a silver coin only to find out it was magnetic (and of course, fake).

It is just a normal circulated silver quarter, there is no concern over authenticity. Tolerance for a silver Washington planchet is +/-3 grains(0.194 grams) so your coin is within tolerance.

I don't see anything that makes me think its fake but I don't understand how a wore down coin like that can weigh that much more than a UNC coin should

the seller just didn't understand what it was worth in bullion. He figured he could sell this rather unattractive fellow for 4x face and make a profit.

It's probably heavy from the dirt on the coin. It looks fine and congrats on finding the silver!
