I came across this one yesterday, 2/25/12. I've never seen one before. And couldn't find any info on it in my Cherry Pickers Guide or any other site for that matter. I thought it might be dirt at first. So I took out my 30X loop and gave it a look in good level light. Its definitely a repunched mint mark. But I don't anything about it. Help?

Looks like split plating to me. It can't be a re-punched MM because starting in 1990, the mintmark was part of the design, and was no longer hand punched into the dies.

Split plating. Can't be re punched because they stopped that many decades ago. I forgot to say to CCF.

A tricky split plate. After going threw my change for 3 hours. I thought I might have found something. Looks like a D over D. But I forgot about the Mint Mark being part of the die. Oh well. Keep on shift threw that change. One day I'll find something!

I was told once that anything after 1988 the mint marks were no longer hand punched so that it is impossible to have a rpm after that date

You remembered or were told wrong, the others are correct, anything after 1989 cannot have RPM's.

After 1990 the mint marks doubled would be a doubled die.
Here is where I had an image of the 1996-D doubled die.

No, Coop...the others have it right.

AFTER 1989 any doubling on a mintmark would have to be part of a doubled die.

The way mintmarks were introduced into making coins changed in 1990. NOT 1991.

On page 24 of ANA's "The Modern Minting Process : U.S. Minting Errors and Varieties", they say:

Quote:
In 1990, the mintmarks for the cent and nickel were added at the master-die stage, and in the following year the dime, quarter and half joined them.

Most understand and get the cent correct, but don't realize that it wasn't for all of the coins.

So if you are looking for RPMs:
Last year for the cent and nickel is 1989.
Last year for the dime, quarter and half is 1990.

Everyone that does error collecting should own that book and read it several times, especially every few years. I just wish the ANA would update it. Mine is from 1997.
