Well I still hope they are jammed with old coins...These little towns are about 1.5hr drive (at best) from any other town that has a pop of 75,000 or more, so I really hope that its been the same coins running around for a long time and no one is really aware of the valure of the oldies :-D

Samsnate, you should go with the banks that are old, meaning that they have a history instead of going to some bank that just got built. For example, a teller at my central dump bank that is exactly a block from my home has a friend who found A LOT of rolls of quarters that apparently got pushed back more and and more into the vault. The bank was built in the 60s too, so going to banks in smaller towns would be a great idea, but just never get disappointed if you get skunked. I hope this helps :D

I live in a pretty big city, but with several small towns nearby. The big city banks have more coins coming through, so you have a better chance of finding silver, but not as much. The small-town banks have much less turnover, so if silver ends up there, it stays a lot longer. I had been finding silver in drips and drops in both places, until a couple of weeks ago.
I went to a newer branch of a small-town bank, that always seems to have a little silver. I talked to the head teller, who had dozens of old rolls of halves. Almost every one of them had at least one 40%! Needless to say, I cleaned her out. By the time it was over, I had found 25 40% and 1 90% half!

Hmmmmm...I wonder if when I go to these banks if I should talk to the teller to see what the oldest batch of coins that she has or if I should ask them for CWRs. I'm curious what would yeild more. There are 3 banks about 2 hrs apart from eachother that I am going to go to and I'm going to mark what rolls came from where so if something turns out to be really good then I will stop back in on my way back and get some more.

Excellent topic! Thanks for starting the thread again. Personally, it's a real toss up for me. I tend to find older coins in small town banks, but you better bring some spare rolls to trade if they don't have a lot of change on hand. The won't let you clean them out of change for their real customers. One teller even made me count out my roll content because I didn't have an account; and yes it was a very small town and people were in the bank to talk instead of bank. I wish more were like this but with the times, it's understandable. By the way, be ready for the evil x-ray vision eye as the head teller, usually the only one in the bank, sizes you up. I also like the large banks in large cities. They are more willing to give you the rolls you want without exchanging rolls and, like when I got up to DC, you never know what "dark sider" coins you'll find in rolls. I do find the large banks more cool to my requests though. But then that's the nature of the beast.

hmmm, I never thought of taking rolls to exchange with the bank. I would be doing one box or less, you think I would need too? And on another not, if I find good things there and go back on my way home, I hope I dont get my same box back. Might have to mark the box.

Yep, it really doensn't matter. Banks tend to keep a minimum of change in the vault, because they have to physically count the contents of the vault before closing every day. It might be possible, but I just don't believe that banks have these "hidden old coins in the back". They usually place weekly orders for coin and currency, or use up the customer-rolled that comes in.

I think you may be right fistfullofdirt. Any one of these banks SHOULD be able to fork me over 40 rolls. Though if I stop back there on the way home, maybe I will bring 40 back that ways too just in case they dont order too often.
