I am confused over the finish on the 1997 RCM coin sets. Here are the two I am sure about: 1997 Oh Canada Set - Includes Flying Loon and has Specimen Finish 1997 Specimen Set - Includes Flying Loon and has Specimen Finish What I am not sure about is the 1997 Prooflike/BU Sets. I understand that there is two of them - Ottawa/Winnipeg and you can tell the difference from the orientation of the loonie/toonie in the package and there is also a difference in the toonie with one of them having a more frosted polar bear. There is no W mark on the Winnipeg coins. Are the other coins in these two sets considered Specimen finish or Prooflike finish? I was thinking Specimen finish since I can't think of where else a 1997 Specimen "normal" loonie would come from. If that is the case, was any other type of set produced in 1997 that contain coins with a Prooflike or BU finish? Or is the only way to obtain BU finish coins for 1997 by getting them individually? i.e. from rolls

Well I now have the 1997 Oh Canada Set and both the Winnipeg and Ottawa sets. Charlton says the Ottawa/Winnipeg sets are Specimen finish, but after having both in hand, the Ottawa set clearly has Specimen finish on all the coins. The Winnipeg set coins appear to have a PL finish. The Loonie is clearly different in each of these two sets so I believe the Winnipeg set is where the 1997 loonies that have a BU/Prooflike finish come from since none were produced for circulation in 1997. The other 1997 set that contains all the coins is the "Bundle of Joy" set which Charlton lists as having a BU finish. The picture that I have though clearly shows these coins as having a Specimen finish.

There's 2 finishes. Prooflike and Specimen. For some reason Specimen Toonies were being put into sets that were supposed to be Prooflike. From my understanding, all the Specimen Toonies are the same finish though. PS You're the one who messaged me on ebay and bidding on my coin eh? :P

Don't forget the Proof loonie from the 1997 double dollar set - 1972 Canada/Russia Hockey Summit - so that's 5 loonies in 1997

Just to clarify. BU is a special manufacturing process and BU coins are only found in BU sets; not rolls which are Circulation coins. The last year for PL sets was 1967. The last BU sets were made in 2010 and Circulation coins have been used in sets since then. :-)
