biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 03/20/2012 3:07 pm The only gold coin that would have that denomination would be one of the tiny fractional territorial gold issues made by private mints and merchants in the 1800s. The problem is that many of them are actually modern reproductions that contain little if any gold. If you see it without an actual denomination(1/2 instead of 1/2 dollar) or a bear, then it is definitely one of the modern repros but absence does not guarantee authenticity either. Without a picture, it is impossible to accurately evaluate it. Report this Post to the Staff

"A Guide to U.S. Coins" by Yeoman. I once witnessed a bidder in a country auction pay over $200, each, for five or six of these two-bit fantasy tokens from the 1960-70's. A sad sight, that ...
