This story os now out on mintnewsblog...... http://mintnewsblog.com/So now that this story is being spread, will the mint try to recall all of these sets from the distributor in Indiana, or will they just let this continue where some people receive silver halves and others clad?

I doubt the Mint can do anything about it, since who would return one? They can't force them to send it back in, since it was their mistake. They have to chalk it up as a big loss. And it sounds like it could be at least a few thousand sets too.

I am not talking about the consumer sending one back, I'm talking about the mint contacting the distributor in Indiana and telling them to put a hold on them until they can be checked for any more silver.

I would think so, but who knows if they really know yet? The Mint isn't run by a bunch of geniuses, for sure.
And I would think they are packaged at their own site in Philadelphia, so they have to check there too, since the silver proof sets aren't ready to be shipped yet, I would think it is being packaged at Philadelphia and then sent to Indiana to be sent to customers.

So the coins are minted in SanFran, then sent to Philly to be packaged, and then sent to Indiana, is that correct. So SanFran sent some silver halves to Philly by mistake and they packaged them and sent them to Indiana? I'm just trying to figure all of this out. I did not know that the SanFran coins were packaged in Philly. I guess I always thought since they were minted in SanFran that they would package them there. Just trying to learn here.

Sorry, you are correct. I had my mind in Philadelphia and not SF for some reason.

Theyre referring to the birth sets which I believe are new this year not the mint coin proof sets just as a heads up so I wouldnt bother taking apart old proof sets

Kind of makes me wonder. I have a few of the silver proof quarters that I haven't looked inside the packages. How could the Mint's inventory counts be accurate? This is worrisome

Here's the latest: The US Mint has officially replied that these silver proofs have been released in error. They are looking in to the details and don;t know how or how many at this point. They are double checking all remaining inventory at all distribution points... Mint Gift Shops, Distribution/shipping centers, and the SF mint. So the chances of getting one with silver from the mint is slim at this point....secondary market is the best bet. I spoke with a writer at Coin World magazine and they will be doing a detailed story about this. It will be in their online issue tomorrow and in the printed magazine mailed out and available in shops on Monday. NGC has requested a silver set which I sent to them...they will be determining what kind of special label is appropriate for these pre releases.

Wow, you're gonna be famous. I hope I don't get a clad half in my silver proof set later this year.

Exactly. I don't even want to think about the lack of care and security. I would think the coins are inventoried daily! The silver shouldn't be near these since none were supposed to include a silver coin from what I saw!

Congrats Timer! This is cool! Quote: I would think the coins are inventoried daily! Really! Errors happen...can you imagine trying to inventory that daily?....I cant imagine the waste of money that would cost....losing a few silver halves is a way better "loss"....

, 19Lyds! timer- You can add to your ebay listing description, just not change the original once you have a bid.

Quote: We strongly suspect that US Mint employees have smuggled error coins, intentionally created, out of the US Mint(s). Back in the 70s, there were errors like a proof struck on a Barber quarter and folded up messes that could only have been made by putting a blank perpendicular between the dies, manually.
