Please do let us know what PCGS and NGC decide what to do, I just placed an order for 2 sets, and will be interesting if PCGS or NGC will give us a special designation

Please don't buy a bunch of these thinking you will definitely get a silver proof kennedy...I have talked to several other people who have purchased these sets from the mint and they did not get the silver...just a clad.

If it helps at all, I live near Louisville KY and got my sets through the Indianapolis distribution center. They were ordered on March 17th. I don't know if this packaging error is limited to one run or not...I have ordered more sets to see and will let you know. I should receive them tomorrow.

An accurate weight should be the only test needed. A clad half has a nominal weight of 11.34 grams and the silver one has a nominal weight of 12.5 grams. Of course if you can see the copper core there is no doubt that a coin is clad but not seeing it doesn't prove that it is silver. Silver proofs definitely do look "whiter" on the devices than clad proofs but all of these, including the tissue test only substitute for an accurate weight. Amazon sells scales that can weigh coins very accurately (+/- 0.02 gram) for fifteen bucks or less and you can pick up a set of calibration weights very inexpensively too. Separating 40% halves is more difficult because the weights are so close but 90% and clad are far enough apart that the weight ranges do not overlap for any but the most extreme examples of each.

Wow!

I know for a fact that the US Mint had a Security Guard which pinched error Presidential dollars and sold them for a profit.

I strongly suspect that some error coins at the US Mint were manufactured to order since they physically would not fit into the US Mints packaging.

We know for a fact that some (these) error coins were smuggled out of the US Mint via the oil pan of a forklift.

We strongly suspect that US Mint employees have smuggled error coins, intentionally created, out of the US Mint(s).

Rumors have circulated for YEARS that whenever the US Mint needed to boost sales, they would simply "create" an error situation. Remember the Missing Edge Lettering "Satin Finish" Monroes in the 2008 Annual Dollar Sets? What about the 2008 Reverse of 2007 Silver Eagles?

I cannot help but wonder, since IMO the Birth Year Sets are losers, if this wasn't intentionally done to increase sales of the new (old) product? (I know that I just submitted an order and suspect that hundreds of other folks have done exactly the same thing!)

Worse yet, I wonder what the long term impact would be if someday its proven that these "sales" tactics were actually used?

"It's still not clear to me that EVERYBODY'S Kennedy half isn't going to be silver.......

I can find very little information on this Sets particulars.

I just don't know."

At today's silver prices, a 90% Silver Kennedy has a "bullion value" of $11.88. That goes up if these are .999 fine silver.

I seriously doubt that a Silver Kennedy is intended to be part of the 2012 Birth Set.

Silver halves aren't supposed to be in the set. It is definitely an error on their part. I bet it is corrected by now, since Timer has said he knows others that got a clad half.

We'll know when the other 2 people get their sets this week on if it was definitely corrected or not.

I received another order of these yesterday....

Out of 30 sets, 22 were SILVER PROOF KENNEDY's ()....the other 8 were CLAD PROOF KENNEDY's!

They may have exhausted the error packaging sets...but it tells me that there are more out there somewhere. Maybe available on the secondary market where people have not checked for silver and just assumed they are clad.

I will be sending a silver set in to NGC at their request. They said they need to examine it before they can determine if it qualifies for a special label.

PCGS has not responded to my emails and I can not get past their cutomer service reps when I call who do not understand the signifigance of this packaging error. I may send one in to them just ot see how they respond in grading. Let me know if anyone has connections at PCGS that can help get around the CS Reps...I would think they would be interested in grading these ... otherwise NGC will be the only ones grading.

I also am in communication with Michael Zelinski...author of Mint News Blog (a good blog if you don;t already subscribe). He thinks this is very significant and will be doing an article about this for his blog. That should increase awareness and interest.

I put one of these Silver Proof Kennedy's up for auction on ebay just to see what the interest level is...it's up to $51.00...here's the link

Do you have to crack these sets open to see if they are silver or not?

No...you don't have to if you can tell the difference between a clad and a silver without looking at the edge... They are much whiter in appearance and they are also next to a clad quarter so it makes comparing them easier.

FYI I just looked at your auction and at the very top of the description it says 2011 S silver Kennedy not 2012. The pic shows a 2012 and everywhere else you make mention you state it is a 2012 so I don't think it's a problem but I wanted to let you know.

Thanks for letting me know about that listing error... I can't change it now since there are already bids. Hopefully people will understand that it is a listing error...

Is there a way to add a note to an existing auction with bids on it? it is a minor typo and there are many other places where it says 2012, so I don't think it is a big deal. Good luck and I hope you do well. I imagine you'll be putting up many more 2012 S silver halves, since the coin is selling for many times the value of just one set.

I think he is okay. The auction title and coin image clearly show 2012. It actually took me a few seconds to find the 2011 reference; I might have even overlooked it had jokingjoker not said anything.
