claims something has fallen onto die, but the mark looks indented and wouldn't a little bit of lettering be missing if that was the case?

Looks real. Struck through something, either a oil or a bit of metal or similar that has got into the press somehow.

I think that it looks more like a planchet flaw.

I think both planchet flaw and foreign objest on the die are plausible. My first though was planchet flaw but I think something on the die is a better explanation.
