It's been a looong time since I've posted up a new coin here but this one is worth the effort. It's a gift from my (much) better half. UNC Incuse 50c. Apologies for the bad pic, but taking pictures of lustrous cupro-nickel coins is not something I've figured out yet.

Very nice, I'm curious to know how many UNC incuses are around. Mr.cruise or Steve50c do either of you have any idea of how many UNC incuses would exist?

Not many I would think. They never went into mint sets, so none can be called specimen. UNC coins are circulated coins that have slight knocks and scratches on them. They have been in circulation approx 12 years now and you wont pic one up in your change in UNC condition. There would only be the coins that people put aside in the beginning.
In a long shot I think the RAM would of cleared there vault of all 2000 coins, last pic I saw they had 2002 coins in storage and I think that was a 2006 photo.
Although I did read recently that the mint no longer relies on the reserve bank to determine money distribution. They now work directly with the banks and security companies. Which means that if a place has people spending more money then they get more coins sent to that location as needed. Yay as you should see more coins when they are supposed to be released in the future, also better distribution too.

Also with the banks working with the mint, it so explains why now when you go to the bank you get those sealed clear bags of $100 of $1 coins. That's the way the mint bags them up. Probably wouldn't want to get $100 of the same year of coin would ya!

Quote: Very nice, I'm curious to know how many UNC incuses are around. When I picked up my 2000 mint set a few months ago my fantasy was that it would contain an incuse and a dollar mule . That would have been so special. But of course it didn't

I have been going through 50c coins for a while now (sort of moved on from 5c). I have noticed a surprising number of UNC coins around. In one $200 bag my wife got for me recently, I got about 50 UNC coins that must have been in someones collection and they got taken to the bank. There were some centenary of federation state coins, 1981 wedding, 2002 windmill, about 20 1977, some 1970, some 2004 Koala and more. I have also found a surprising number of really nice coins (eg 70s issue still with lustre) in other lots of coins as well. I am not sure if this is normal, or if people have been deciding to dispose of their (or other peoples) collections recently. Where I am going with this is, there is still a chance - although small - to find an UNC incuse 50c in your change (only if it was collected and recently re-released into the wild).

i only ever recall seeing one for sale on ebay and even that may have been aUNC Mint set would be only way to get one UNC but have never heard of one being found Incuse variety not picked up straight away which gave time for coins to circulate. 12 years on I would consider EF find as a great score and probably the best you'll find unless, just like ozcoins said, it has come directly from collection

PS. Mark, that is a very nice coin! Despite what I said about the possibility of finding an UNC incuse coin, I would not expect I will ever find one. Kind of like I would not expect to ever find NCLT, but it has happened anyway (actually its quite similar because they both have to come back out of someones collections). Having taken a photo of a fairly nice coin, and having the flash show up (or is is that magnify?) every little blemish, that just makes it more clear to me how nice the coin you have shared is.

I too have noticed that with commemorative and 1970's 50c that often you can get a couple of bags with very very nice coins. The only explanation is that someone has dumped a collection. I have found whole bags of federation coins before as well. A couple of times my usual bank has done a stock audit and pulled out some 5c coins from the vault which have no coins dated beyond 1999. So there is still a small chance the UNC we all long for is in a bank vault, tucked away since 2000 but I don't our my chances

I am pretty certain the banks I use do not have any old coins sitting around. Since I started searching 50c coins one has run out of 50c a few times....

markn: would have to see it in the flesh, but I think this may be a little better than my best example, you where did you find it? hmmmm, that's probably a secret, but don't worry, I won't tell anyone Goatieman: There were approx 200k of this coin minted. They were all released into Circulation. Finding one at all is very rare, finding one in the condition above is very, very, very rare. I have only seen / know of a handful in this condition - less than 6. I have one, so does Markn (his may be a tiny bit better than mine ).
