As I said, Stuart Andersen or thepurplepenny would be able to tell you lots about rolls & specimens.

PL stands for proof like. At this point in time I believe specimens/PL coins would basically be coins that could have been produced for sets that never eventuated in a set. So most likely cleaner &/or neater fields, possiblly with better & crisper details. (this is what I know)

As for incused 50 cents, I opened the till today at work &...
what did I have sitting on top?
a lovely 2000 Incused 50 cent piece. See below:

I also do have another much nicer one (EF+, I'll try & post a photo when I get home (weekend)) which cost mid $50's a couple of years ago. I missed out on one from Sterling & Currency which ended up selling for $135 odd dollars.
I'm not really a noodler (although I've been trying to do some $50 note types/years research recently).

Have I been summoned to talk about rolls? Off topic I guess.
This is a good read:
http://www.australian-threepence.co...t-rolls.html

I guess you have to determine if you have a mint roll or a security roll. A security roll could contain anything, new coins on each end and all banged up circulated range of dates in the middle. Or you could be lucky to get a full roll of all new coins but if you don't know their source it's pot luck.
If it's a mint roll that's different. In mint packaging these are "guaranteed" so to speak that they are original new coins in the roll. Are they all from the same die? Who would know, it depends on what the production load was at that time and how many presses were minting that coin.

Hopefully in about a week, i'll have one too. I'm bidding on one of these quicksales. Bit pricey, but the obverse doesn't look too bad in the scan. The flag side has a few nicks (a long way from perfect) so its a gamble... Knowing my luck a better one will turn up on ebay for less $$ now I've committed with a bid on this one.

Basil, I think yours is a regular coin. See if you can see the differences between the following pictures:

Incused flag where the blue line indicates the 4 areas that are different, on an incused these areas are quite smooth.
Incuse-Goodness-:

Regular coin where the same 4 areas are not smooth, but have a certain 'roughness' or texture to them.
Incuse-Goodness-:

Incused Star above, smooth interior, no texture at all, Regular star below, slightly smaller and a 'rough' or textured interior.
Incuse-Goodness-:

The interior of the Stars on my coins didn't come up very well, but trust me, when you finally find an Incuse, you will see the difference straight away.

Did anyone on here get this lot ?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAP...p=true&rt=nc

They all look pretty good, but there seems to be the 'perfect' angle on these coins that makes them look better.

And an image of one I picked up off quicksales, better condition that 2 non incused ones I picked up out of circulation so I'm happy!

9 is a bit excessive for a collector and over $30 each leaves a small to non existent margin for profit. Not the best lot for that price IMO.

Why would you need 9 of these in ordinary condition

I was thinking about this after I posted it and I don't think it is that weird. I know of people who have bought many many average circulated scarce dates such as the 1972 5c and 1968 1c and 2c. I suppose they are investing?

Yes I can see that people will invest in these coins but as they get recognised I think you will be amazed at how many will be found by noodlers and flood the market and make the initial investment a bad deal

I have noticed a definite drop in ebay prices for the incuse at the moment. I think with investing its better to get one high grade example like markn now has than 10 crappy one for the same price.

enword

I have one in a similar state as markn, and four others I have found from circulation.

I recently picked up a reasonably nice one for $22 which I plan on retrofitting into a PNC - will probably be the only incused in a PNC (oh wait, have I just told EVERYONE and given them the same idea?)
